Kawagoe (27 Feb 2005)

Kawagoe is a middle size sattelite city of Tokyo-- it is located 30km away from centre of
Tokyo.  Kawagoe was a northern strategic guardian of Edo-- Tokyo's old name-- for more
than 300 years.  It is therefore called "small Edo."  In fact, Edo-era atmosphere is hanging in
the air of this city...
Kawagoe developed as a castle town-- there still remain
many Edo-era temples.  This is the biggest and the
highest rank temple in Kawagoe-- Kita-In.
Some streets and buildings have been the
same for 300 years...  The first "Time Tower"
was build about 360 years ago.  The current
"Tower" is 80 years old, and its bell is rung
four times a day to let people know time.
Time has been stopped
along Kashi-ya Street.  After
the Great Kanto Earthquake,
many sweet-shops and
confectioners moved from
Tokyo.  Yes, it is still 1923
here.
