Oita (25 May 2005)
Oita played an important role in the Japanese history in the 16th century when feudal lords were holding their own grounds. Oita was ruled by Sorin Otomo, the first Christian feudal lord in Japan. Actually, Oita is the place where Christianity was first delivered in Japan by Saint Francisco Xavier in 1549.

The Oita Castle was originally constructed by Sorin Otomo. The current castle was widely developed by several lords who succeeded this region. Some buildings are remaining, but a quite modern hall is now in the central part-- why such an ugly combination could be thought???

Statue of Sorin Otomo. He was a Christian, but his name "Sorin" is the Buhddism holly name- he changed his name from Yoshishige to Sorin. This is not a famous story, but history is sometimes far beyond our imagination.

During the reign of Sorin, many European traders visited Oita. At an shopping arcade, one big Portugal ship model is exhibited.
